See Hugh Jackman’s First Wolverine Audition

It’s hard to believe we’ve been watching Hugh Jackman play Wolverine since 2000’s X-Men. He’s appeared in seven X-Men films and has been featured in a lead role in many of them. Fans can’t get enough of the cigar smoking mutant who is full of adamantium, and Wolverine has only become more popular over time – hence the starring in all the films. Jackman’s name is practically synonymous with the character, and like most roles, it all started with an audition. In this ten minute video, Jackman goes through Logan’s lines for the first time with director Bryan Singer.

Jackman uses his native accent in the audition and takes direction from Bryan Singer on figuring out the delivery. Seeing this makes me want to watch Jackman do some of the lines from X-Men now after playing the character for 14 years.

He’s had an interesting relationship with Wolverine in that time. Not too long ago, he said he was done with the character. With the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse and another Wolverine film, he’ll have almost 20 years of playing the same character. Besides being tiring, Jackman isn’t getting any younger.

However, as X-Men: Days of Future Past moved into theaters, Jackman backed off that statement and said he’s less sure he’ll leave the role. He told Screenrant that “the whole thing feels fresher to me than ever.” I hope he sticks around because I’d like to see Jackman as Wolverine for at least the next few X-Men films.

Sort of related: since we’re already taking a look into Hugh Jackman’s past, please enjoy this photo of Jackman as Gaston in a 1996 live production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

What do you think – is he a better Wolverine or Gaston? Jump to the comments and let us know.

He’s the best person for Wolverine but his Gaston looks so on point. I want to see that entire play.

As Gaston, he looks like Colossus!
