Sculptor Mashes up Directors and Their Films in Gorgeous Detail

Alright, so my holiday wish-list is now officially started, and leading the “must have” column is pretty much all of these sculptures of directors mashed together with their most famous films.KingCutsFullGroup

Seattle-based artist Mike Leavitt painstakingly sculpted these beautiful figures of 16 of his favorite filmmakers in incredible detail for a series he calls King Cuts. Mashing together each director with aspects of their most iconic films, the result is some strange but absolutely gorgeous representations of the directors’ work. While some are a bit humorous at first glance, the references they make to each filmmaker’s work is truly reverent of their legacy in film.

Miyazaki5Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be an ounce of caricature in the any of the faces, which seems to add to the contrast of the other-worldly bodies on each figure. The faces are respectful and shy away from being cartoonish, as if each is saying “here I am and here is my work.”

What’s really amazing about each of these figures is that they’re all 100% hand-sculpted. We live in a world where we can get almost any molded and mass produced maquettes in the genre of your choice from any number of collectibles companies, so it’s really something special to know these are absolutely one of a kind.

Take a look at the gallery below for some higher detail pictures and on Leavitt’s site for original sketches and some videos on the creation of each figure. They can also be purchased from the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City.

What do you think of Leavitt’s sculptures? Which ones are your favorite? What filmmakers would you love to see if he does a second series? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
