Wipe the blood from your teeth and get in the pit, it’s time for a recap of this week’s best hardcore, metal, and punk rock. We dug through the record crates to find the new tunes we think you need to spin and rage to. The year is nearly over, so there are fewer and fewer new titles hitting the shelves, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few gems out there worth listening to. Strap in kiddies, it’s time to rock.

Black Friday saw the release of Converge’s “Thousands of Miles Between Us.” It’s a full set from their All We Love We Leave Behind tour, plus hours of interviews, videos, and rare footage. For fans of these hardcore gods, it’s an absolute must own. They posted a preview of the set, and it’s glorious. Check it out below then head to the Deathwish Inc. estore and pick up a copy.

Last week also saw the release of the Brainsteams first full-length, No Place Else. It’s low-fi, catchy punk rock, the kind of stuff that you would have passed around on cassette back in the day. No Place Else is a fantastic album, front to back, so don’t skip this one if you are a fan of garage-style rock. Check out the track “Simple Joys” below and then pick up the album via Bad Diet.

I’m not sure how I have not heard of the band Yellow Eyes until now, but their stuff is black metal perfection. Their album, Sick With Bloom, comes out this month, but you can check a preview right now. It’s dark, ambient stuff, heavy and ugly. There’s melodic guitar work in here, too, and comparisons to Deafheaven seem inevitable, but Yellow Eyes have their own thing going on. If you’re the vinyl type, they are shipping a limited number of those now from their label’s site. What’s the holiday season without a little black metal?

Grieved have an album coming out early next year, but they are previewing a track called “Fogbound” now. It’s pretty straightforward hardcore, but sometimes that is exactly what the day calls for: Heavy, crushing, and relentless, Grieved is a solid soundtrack to a crappy day. You can stream “Fogbound” now and pick up the full album when it hits January 22.

I’ve had a long standing belief that all songs should be under three minutes or over seven. Either short, brutal blasts or long, droning opuses. Morality Crisis fall into the second half of that equation. they just released a track that is 22 minutes long. You might think that’s along time to listen to one song (you are right, by the way) but these dudes keep it fresh by constantly shifting gears throughout the track. You can’t peg it down as one specific thing, it just changes too often. The song is even called “Mash,” which is a perfect description. (via Noisey)

Lastly, there is a new Sunn O))) record out. It’s called Kannon and sounds pretty much like what you’d expect a Sunn O))) record to sound like. There’s a bit more vocals here, something featured on every track, but it’s the same droning, feedback heavy stuff the band is known for. It’s a great soundtrack to despair, the kind of record you put on when you need to write some poems about your internal misery or you’re cooking up some deviled eggs. You either like this stuff or you don’t, there’s no middle ground here.
