Scream at a Wall: Hardcore for the Masses (March Madness Edition)

Wipe the blood from your teeth and get in the pit, it’s time for a recap of this week’s best hardcore, metal, and punk rock. This is where the real March Madness is; it’s in the fuzz, spit, and filth of the heaviest of heavy tunes. Embrace the real madness, embrace your inner darkness. Strap in kiddies, it’s time to rock.

Wrong have announced they’ll be releasing their first full length via Relapse Records on April 29. These guys are getting lots of comparisons to Helmet and Unsane, and it’s easy to hear why. Their sound is relentless, a thick wall that drenches you in feedback and caustic rhythm. It’s seriously rad stuff. Their self-released EP is available right now (for a mere four dollars) and they’ve already released a track from their new record, which you can stream below. After you smash your head against the track, go pre-order the new record.

Gadget’s The Great Destroyer is almost upon us (March 11) and we are insanely excited about this one. This album is vicious, a monster of gnashing teeth and bloody blast beats. The band is gracing us with one track preview after another, so give a listen to what they’ve unveiled so far and then go order yourself a copy. Order one for you neighbor, too. You know, that guy who is always screaming at his TV and mowing his law super aggressively. That guy needs to get some rage out and this album will help.

INVERLOCH just released their debut album, titled Distance/Collapsed. It’s an ugly and mean experience, one that creeps up on your like a Lovecraftian creature from the void. It’s death metal, through and through. If you like your music to wallow with you in despair and darkness, you’ll love this stuff. You can stream the whole thing now, and you sorta have to listen to it all. It’s really not the kind of album you can experience in chunks. [Noisey]

If you are looking for something with a bit more melody but still riddled with angst, check out Rarity’s new track “Stranger.” It’s from their upcoming album I Couldn’t Be Weaker which is coming April 15. It’s a rockin’ song that dances on the edge of being too emotional at times, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s good stuff anyway you cut it, even if don’t normally go for this sort of thing.

We really love Greys. We’ve eagerly gobbled up everything new they’ve released and soon we’ll have a new full-length album to shove down our gullet. Coming this Spring–April 22, to be exact–Outer Heaven is one you should mark your calendars for. Check out the socially and politically charged track “No Star” below and start counting down the days until we can consume all of Outer Heaven. [Nosiey]

Unfun have released their final album, Waterboarding, and it’s clear they are intent on going out with a noise-driven, punk rock bang. It’s a hell of an album and a fine send off. If you gotta go, go out on top. The digital version is out now and physical copies are due on March 18, so stream away and then order yourself an LP.

Finally, we reach into the past yet again and point out an album that is criminally overlooked. ALL was the band who’s biggest claim to fame is they aren’t The Descendents. Sure, The Descendents are one of – if not the – greatest punk bands of all time, but ALL never got a fair shake. You can read all about it plenty of places or watch the very excellent documentary Filmage that covers the strange transition that lead to the formation of ALL from the ashes of The Descendents, but the truth is that ALL freakin’ rocked. Their album Mass Nerder is a classic, no doubt, and if you’ve never had the pleasure of listening to it you should change that now.

That’s it for this week. Go forth, throw some horns up, and keep spinning in the black circle. If there’s a metalcore, grindcore, hardcore, or any other -core song you think the world needs to hear, sound off in the comments below. \m/
