This post contains light spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War. If you haven’t seen the film and don’t want to know the slightest thing about it, turn back now.
What’s an Asgadian to do when facing down the deadliest enemy the universe has ever seen but their hammer is hopelessly shattered? Forge a new weapon. Create a Thanos-smasher that could only be birthed from the raw power of a neutron star. But just how much power does a neutron star put out, and what can that value tell us about the true power of Thor?
In my latest episode of Because Science, I’m breaking down the Stormbreaker forging scene in Avengers: Infinity War. Specifically, what I want to know is how much energy the cosmic dwarf Eitri of Nidavellir could possibly harness from neutron stars — the most extreme objects in the universe — and how Thor could withstand that kind brilliant barrage while melting down the magical metal known as Uru.
Spoiler alert: Thor is unvaporizeable. I am not.
