NBC has announced during its upfront presentation that the network will air a special on February 15, 2015 celebrating forty years of Saturday Night Live. There are no details on the content of the special, but it will undoubtedly feature classic clips from the sketch comedy show as well as comments from its most celebrated alumni.
SNL has had an interesting 39th season that comes to a close next Saturday, May 17, with alumni Andy Samberg hosting. This season has seen the departure of Weekend Update anchor and head writer Seth Meyers as he took over for Jimmy Fallon as the host of Late Night when Fallon moved to The Tonight Show. SNL has been struggling to find its groove adding new featured players, adding Cecily Strong and Colin Jost to the Update desk and facing a bit of controversy regarding the diversity of the cast.
Season 39 has had a lot of highs though, including returning hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jonah Hill, Louis CK and Melissa McCarthy as well as episodes featuring Ed Norton, Kerry Washington, Drake and Anna Kendrick.
The SNL 40th Anniversary special will air on February 15, 2015 on NBC.
