In case you weren’t aware, Ryan Gosling is actually pretty musical, what with his band Dead Man’s Bones that released an album in 2009 and the music he recorded for the soundtrack of Blue Valentine. Gosling is essentially perfect, but the reason we bring this up because a new trailer was just released for his upcoming film La La Land, a musical in which he stars alongside Emma Stone.
Based on the new trailer, it looks like the movie makes a Pixar-like use of color, meaning it utilizes it in a way that’s minimalist but vibrant, a hue or two overwhelming a scene to enhance an emotion or moodâstanding in stark contrast to director Damien Chazelle’s most notable other work, the shadowy Whiplash. Beyond that, the trailer also highlights the obvious chemistry between Stone and Gosling, who have previously worked together on movies like Gangster Squad and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
In the movie, Gosling and Stone play a jazz musician and an actress, respectively, who cross paths as they both try to make it big in their industries. Since La La Land is a musical, it’s great that Stone is no slouch when it comes to either and can more-than pull her weight: She recently joined Maya Rudolph for an endearing duet of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” on Maya and Marty, and if you haven’t seen her in the music video for “Anna” by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, it’s worth it for the fun alone, and filled with super neat choreography.
Before the film is hits theaters in December, watch the trailer above, and try not to let how cute Gosling and Stone are together prevent you from doing anything else today.
