Rumor: Sony Reportedly Working on a PS4.5

Well, it looks like a new, more powerful PS4 might be on its way. According to Kotaku, several of their developer sources have told them that Sony is working on a new version of the PS4, which is currently being called the PS4.5. We don’t know whether that’s the actual name of the new machine, or simply a codename.

The console will reportedly have more graphical horsepower (thanks to a better GPU) capable of playing games at the 4K resolution, and will help enhance PlayStation VR games. It’s not clear, however, whether current PS4 owners would somehow be able to upgrade their current hardware to get the extra juice without having to go out and purchase a brand new console, or if some games will only be playable on the upgraded version of the PS4, a la the New 3DS.

Again, take this with a grain of salt. At the moment, it’s just a rumor. But let’s be honest, the move would make a lot of sense. New gaming machines are pretty much outdated as soon as they release. Waiting five to seven years to upgrade consoles is not ideal, especially with the virtual reality revolution just around the corner. The rumor would also explain why Sony decided to process PlayStation VR games through the PS4, rather than include a separate processing unit. So by increasing the graphical capabilities of the PS4, it should, in theory, make the PS VR experience even better.

Also, keep in mind that Sony has included the newest piece of media formats on their gaming rigs before. The PS2 had DVD, and the PS3 had Blu-ray; wouldn’t it make sense to include 4K?

Incrementally upgrading hardware may just be the new direction the industry is going in. At their showcase earlier this year, Microsoft also hinted that they may eventually take this route as well.

Sony declined to comment on this story.

What do you guys think about this rumor? Is it legit? Do you think it would make sense for Sony to do this? Would you buy a PS4.5? Let us know in the comments below!
