Rumor: Marisa Tomei to Appear in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR as Aunt May

Did you think Avengers 2.0 Captain America: Civil War was already filled to the brim with just about every Marvel Comics character that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby ever created? As it stands right now, Civil War boasts a cast of sixteen main characters (seventeen, if the stories of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk making an appearance are true).

Well, if current rumors are to be believed, it looks like they’ve added just one more to bunch. According to Heroic Hollywood, Marisa Tomei, who was cast for the new Tom Holland Spider-Man reboot back in early July as Spidey’s now much-younger Aunt May, “quietly shot her scenes before production wrapped.” Last week, it was revealed by a television news report from Atlanta that furniture props for what looked to be Peter Parker’s bedroom were being delivered to the set. Will Aunt May be giving young Peter a pep talk in his bedroom set?

This jibes with earlier reports back when Marisa Tomei was originally cast, that the entire reason she was cast so early in the process was simply so the character could be introduced first as a cameo in Civil War, which was in the middle of shooting. That makes sense, because the new Spider-Man reboot probably doesn’t even start filming till sometime in the middle of next year, so why cast Aunt May so early, unless she was making an appearance in Civil War?

While it’s doubtful this will be more than a tiny part (unless this movie is going to be three hours long), it bodes well that Marvel Studios is thinking ahead by casting a great actress for the part, instead of sticking just anyone in for the cameo and re-casting it later. But we’ve come to expect such forward thinking from Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel by now.

What do you think of Aunt May showing up in Civil War? Good call, or is this too many characters for one movie? Let us know in the comments below!
