Rumor: Ewan McGregor to Return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for New STAR WARS Films

Yesterday we reported the news that the second Star Wars anthology film after Rogue One now seems to include both a young Han Solo and Boba Fett, tracing the history of their rivalry in something of an outer space crime caper. Now a new rumor has surfaced about what lies beyond that film in the stand-alone chapters of Star Wars, and if it’s true, it’s sure to make many a fan very happy. According to Schmoes Know, Disney and Lucasfilm are looking to return Ewan McGregor to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a movie set between Episodes III and IV, and most interestingly, a possible trilogy of Obi-Wan centric movies. Their sources tell them that the film (or films) would “focus on Obi-Wan’s adventures between the two trilogies as he watches over a maturing Luke Skywalker. The film(s) would be stand alone adventure(s), with the possibility of characters like Owen Lars and Darth Maul appearing.”

Darth Maul?? Now that’s where things could get interesting. In the Clone Wars animated series, it was revealed that Darth Maul survived the events of The Phantom Menace, and after slowly putting himself together again, mind and body, he went out on a mission of revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi. Maul’s fate was left hanging in that series and is one of the last major Clone Wars characters and storylines that we know isn’t set to get resolved in the upcoming season of Rebels. And both cartoon series have been designated official canon by Disney/Lucasfilm, so in the movies, Darth Maul is still out there, looking for revenge against Obi-Wan. Also, actor Joel Edgerton has stated that he’d return to the role of Owen in a new Star Wars film in a heartbeat. And Darth Maul, much like Boba Fett, is a fan favorite character that no doubt Disney would want to mine for more gold.

Several years ago, Dark Horse Comics published a 13-page short story called “Old Wounds“, which featured a vengeful Maul coming to Tatooine and attempting to take out Kenobi once and for all. The fight  ultimately ends at Luke Skywalker’s homestead when he’s just a small boy and explains why his Uncle Owen doesn’t want Obi-Wan anywhere near him in A New Hope. That short story could be expanded on and make a very cool movie if done right, something like a Star Wars version of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (although I’m not sure we need a trilogy of films of Obi-Wan’s time on Tatooine). Although the Star Wars prequels were polarizing (to say the least) Ewan McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan in the one consistent highlight, and I think given a good script and no Anakin to worry about, we get could a tremendous movie out of this, if true.

So what do you guys think? Are you excited about more Obi-Wan, or should everything from the prequel era remain dead and buried? Let us know in the comments below!
