Hear Rick Moranis Reprise His SPACEBALLS Role on THE GOLDBERGS

Update, 5/8/18:

ABC has released a clip from the next episode of The Goldbergs, airing May 9, previewing Rick Moranis returning to his role from Spaceballs. He came out of retirement to provide the voice for Dark Helmet, and you can hear him talk about the Schwartz once again in the above clip shared by Yahoo! Entertainment.

Previously:

We are unabashed Rick Moranis super fans who think every movie he made during his far too short career is a precious gift that should be revered by all, and that includes his hilarious performance as the evil Dark Helmet in Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs. So you can imagine our excitement at learning he will shockingly be reprising the role, which is only matched by our surprise it will happen on an episode of ABC’s The Goldbergs.

USA TODAY reports Moranis, who last year briefly returned to acting after a 20-year break alongside Dave Thomas as their old SCTV characters Bob and Doug McKenzie, will appear on this week’s The Goldbergs, which is set in the 1980s. He will reportedly voice Dark Helmet in a dream of film-enthusiast Adam Goldberg. The description for the episode, titled “Spaceballs,” says “Adam tries to start a Mel Brooks club after he sees the movie Spaceballs.”

In a statement, show creator Adam F. Goldberg described himself as a “lifelong fan,” and said he thinks “Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any ‘80s movie as Dark Helmet.”

While we’re never going to be anything but grateful for more Rick Moranis, we obviously would have preferred if this news was about Moranis reprising the role for a sequel to the movie. And it sounds like Goldberg agrees, and he thinks this could be a way to make that happen.

“As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation,” he said, “And I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!” Now that’s a good idea.

Turns out good is not always dumb.

What other role would you love to see Rick Moranis reprise? Use the Schwartz–and your keyboard–to tell us in the comments below.
