RICK AND MORTY Live Read, Matt Ryan Returns as Constantine, and More TV News

We’re finally there, everyone. It’s the time to absorb the post-Comic-Con warm and fuzzies. You’ve probably recovered from your lack of sleep if you were at the convention, and entertainment news has settled to a rate of reasonable consumption… for now. The Television Critics Association summer press tour is about to kick off, so be prepared for more television news. Not yet though! Catch up on the latest in today’s TV-Cap with a Rick and Morty live read, some casting updates for Vikings and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and more.

Because They Can. Justin Roiland, the voice actor of both leads in Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, performed an unusual live read at Comic-Con. His performance was accompanied by some storyboards and focused on a bizarre Georgia court case that descended into tons of swearing and colorful language. You can’t make up stuff this wild. Just watch the above to see what I mean. [Nerdist]

Spinoff of Song. The Late Late Show with James Corden has found great success with the Carpool Karaoke segment. Corden has driven around with the likes of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michelle Obama, and so many more for the purpose of singing hit songs. And now, the mini music extravaganza is its own show, and it’s been purchased by Apple. They’ll distribute the series via Apple Music, of course, and you’ll be able to easily buy any songs from the karaoke showdown that you’re into. They’ve nabbed 16 episodes of the show, but it won’t necessarily be hosted by Corden (he is going to serve as an executive producer). [Variety]

Casting Net. How about some casting updates? History’s Vikings is adding Adam Copeland for season five. The former WWE star will take on the role of the warrior Ketill Flatnose. Over on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Lilli Birdsell will be joining season four. She’ll star as a recurring character named Lucy. [Deadline and Comic Book Resources]

Some Analysis. How has Futurama accomplished what it has over the course of the series? It’s about science, sci-fi, adventure, and characters, and YouTuber kaptainkristian looks at how all those elements come together to make the cartoon soar in “Futurama – The Science of Comedy.” Check it out above. Behind the Music. Netflix’s Stranger Things is making waves across social media. If you’re among those who have watched it and who are into the soundtrack, you should check out the band making it happen. They’re called S U R V I V E, and band members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein came up with the distinctive sounds playing throughout the show. Learn more here at Nerdist.

More Team-Ups. Guardians of the Galaxy was one of those movies in which darn near everyone was a breakout character, but Rocket Raccoon and Groot stuck with fans especially. They’re going to take the spotlight in a series of animated shorts for Disney XD. What will those shorts look like? Cartoon Brew shared the test animation from Passion Pictures, and I’m sold… not that it would take much. [Nerdist]

Working Magic. If you’re still lamenting the cancellation of NBC’s Constantine, there are still some legs you can grab onto if you want to see more of Matt Ryan as John Constantine. Ryan has reprised the role for Arrow on The CW, and he’s also going to voice the character in Justice League Dark. It’s John’s animated debut, and it’s exciting that they turned to Ryan for the project. [Nerdist]

An Animated Family. IGN’s revealed the poster for Fox’s Son of Zorn, and it’s just about the best family portrait ever. I mean, do your childhood pictures include an animated He-Man type character? I’m guessing not. The live action animated hybrid comedy will debut on September 25. [IGN, Image: Fox]

Will you be buying all the episodes of Carpool Karaoke? Sound off in the comments and maybe share your hopes for possible future guest stars?
