The world at large has been on tenterhooks, depleting the world’s supply of Szechuan Sauce and wearing out the novelty of shouting “Pickle Rick,” waiting for word from Adult Swim about when we’d finally be getting the fourth season of Rick and Morty, easily one of the best and funniest shows on television. After its not-cliffhanger ending of season 3 back in October, 2017, both audiences and creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon were left waiting to hear if the show would even get picked up for more. Finally, on May 10, 2018, the world got its answer: not only will there be more Rick and Morty, there will be at least 70 more episodes.
Roiland shared a drawing–with the date many times on it, like a newspaper hostages have to hold up–featuring mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his slowly-spine-growing grandson Morty Smith along with the words “70 more episodes!” Nerdist reached out to a source close to the production who confirmed that 70 is indeed the number, and not a weird exaggeration or late-onset April Fool’s Day joke.
Roiland’s Instagram post also said “So tired of living in Harmon’s shower. Now I can finally move back to my own place and we can finally get back to work,” and his Twitter post jabbed, “Looking forward to all the tweets asking where it is!” Fending off rabid but angry and fairly ungrateful fans’ demands for information on the series has become a job in and of itself for the creators, but such is the power of a show that is simultaneously a gripping and thoughtful sci-fi show and the weirdest and silliest comedy on TV.
70 more episodes means we’ll get at least five, if not seven, more seasons of the runaway hit. Perhaps an order for that many episodes all at once, rather than a season at a time as is often the Adult Swim method, means we won’t have to wait as long between seasons, and that the show can have a satisfying season arc, unlike the one we had for season 3, which just sort of ended.
