REVIEW: Valiant’s QUANTUM AND WOODY MUST DIE #1

Valiant Entertainment’s Quantum and Woody was the best superhero comic you weren’t reading. It was quite possibly the most insane book on the stands and, quite frankly, not enough people bought it. Sure, it was offensive and violent, but it was also heartfelt and sincere. It was the mixture of those qualities – sprinkled with a healthy amount of dick jokes – that made it so damn special. Fortunately, this crude buddy romp has returned with a brand new jumping on point under the title Quantum and Woody Must Die. The good news is this issue is fantastic. Seriously, don’t skip it.

The elevator pitch goes something like this: Quantum and Woody are the world’s most unlikely superheroes. A freak experiment left these adopted bothers with superpowers, but the rub is that they have to make physical contact once every 24 hours to make the powers work. Oh yeah, and they generally hate each other. There’s plenty of other madness going on in this series, but that’s all you need to know before diving in.

James Asmus is on writing duties, and he packs these pages with a healthy amount of juvenile humor and ridiculous action. The relationship between Quantum and Woody is what sells this book, and Asmus keeps that front and center the entire time. He dials back the brotherly relationship a little, which is a bummer, but the banter and awkward partnership has not slipped one bit. There’s still a heart in this book, but you can’t help but miss that family aspect.

Artist Steve Lieber comes on board in this issue and the results are nothing short of fantastic. Fans of his work on Superior Foes of Spider-Man will find lots to love here. Lieber’s artwork is a perfect fit for these characters and their bizarre world. The humor and action never miss a beat, and that is largely due to the expert pacing and direction of Lieber’s art. Dave McCaig’s colors wonderfully compliment the line work, giving a smooth finish to the rough edges.

If you are a fan of superhero comics, but want something a bit more ridiculous than the typical Avengers issue, do yourself a favor and check out Quantum and Woody Must Die #1. Did we mention it has a talking, super-powered goat that has the mind of Quantum and Woody’s dad implanted in it? Cause it totally does, guys. It totally does.
