Retired Married Couple Cosplays CAPTAIN AMERICA, UP, and More

When your friends and family tell you they’ve seen your face all over the internet, you know your cosplay game is on point. That’s how one couple found out their Peggy and Cap cosplay at WonderCon had gone viral.

Known as the Cosplay Parents, they are relative novices to the con scene. But like most cosplayers, once they got started, they were immediately hooked. Their daughter spent years creating her own costumes and attending Anime Expo, but it wasn’t until the couple retired that they caught the cosplay bug themselves.

Their first foray into cosplay was when they put together outfits for Disneyland’s annual Mickey’s Halloween Party in 2014. Being avid Disney fans, they chose to dress up as Carl and Ellie from Up. Creating the outfits with items from their closets and thrift shops, they easily put together costumes with just a few slight modifications. Soon enough, they moved up to the big leagues, cosplaying Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter.

Portraying age-appropriate characters they can relate to is more than just recreating outfits; the couple also enjoy “extending” the story lines of the characters by creating a story within their cosplay. Ellie doesn’t meet her end in the opening montage of Up—she and Carl live long lives and go on great adventures together. Cap didn’t become a popsicle—he and Peggy married and she became a S.H.I.E.L.D Director. These fanfic style happy ending storylines are what give their cosplay a sweetness and depth that comes through as they show off their costumes at cons.

The new cosplay fanatics have big plans for even more duo ensembles, with ideas for everything from Han Solo and Leia from The Force Awakens to Anna and Kristoff from Frozen.
