It’s been 20 years since the first Resident Evil shuffled its way into our hearts and our collective nightmares. Now Capcom is offering a glimpse of the next generation of Survival Horror in a new gameplay trailer for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Resident Evil 7 will be the first game in the series to use first-person perspective, and this new footage takes place from the POV of a young woman who finds herself trapped in a decrepit mansion as something not quite human pursues her. There’s something unsettling about the way that this creature opens doors, and there was also a nice surprise at the end of the clip which reveals that this isn’t simply a mindless zombie. It’s not clear if the character featured in this video will also be one of the leads of the game, but her inability to fight added to the tension as she tried to elude her pursuer.
According to Capcom, Resident Evil 7 will maintain continuity with the previous games in the series, but with a new main character who doesn’t have fighting skills like the earlier leads Chris, Jill, Leon, or Claire. All we know so far is that the game takes place at “a sinister plantation mansion in modern day rural America.” The Playstation 4 version of the game will also be playable with Playstation VR, which will give gamers an even more immersive experience.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will be released on January 24, 2017.
