RESIDENT EVIL 2 Remake Officially Announced by Capcom

A video released from Capcom’s R&D Division 1 has announced that after years of hoping, pining, and building their own, fans will finally get the remade version of Resident Evil 2 that they have been asking for. This came following a Facebook poll put forth by Capcom late last month, in which the company tested the waters by asking fans to sound off on their thoughts of a Resident Evil 2 remake. Almost 3,000 people responded in kind, and it seems the reaction was positive enough for Capcom to give the project the green light.

Ever since 2002, when Capcom announced that they would be remaking the original Resident Evil game and releasing it on the Nintendo Gamecube, fans have clamored for an updated version of the beloved sequel. Constantly in contention with Resident Evil 4 for the title of “best in the series”, Resident Evil 2 took the fixed-camera claustrophobia of the original game and expanded it into bigger areas, with crazier monsters, and a story that truly built the mythos as it is known today.

Of course, as seen in the video, there is no word on how Capcom is planning on approaching the remake, but it might be safe to assume it will be handled the same way as their HD remake of the original game, which released on current gen consoles earlier this year. The remake was met with praise for its updated visuals and return to the classic fixed-camera formula of the series. If this is the direction they plan to go with Resident Evil 2’s remake, they should see one of the highest selling games in the franchise in years.

That is not to say the third-person shooter mechanic or new stories have worn out their welcome, though. Resident Evil Revelation 2, their latest episodic release on consoles, was also met with positive reviews upon release. Here’s to hoping that Capcom can find a decent balance between reintroducing the classic games to new players, without sacrificing their forward momentum with the series.
