RESIDENT EVIL 2 Looks Horrifying in Unreal Engine 4

For quite some time, fans have been waiting for news that Resident Evil 2, arguably one of the most popular titles in the Resident Evil series, would receive some sort of remake or remaster as done with the original game. Capcom has teased the idea of doing the same for the GameCube exclusive title Resident Evil Zero, but there is still no word on whether Resident Evil 2 will ever get another chance. It seems not all fans are content with waiting though.

Indie developer InvaderGames has decided to take matters into their own hands, and have been crafting an HD remake of Resident Evil 2 in the Unreal Engine 4. They call their creation Resident Evil 2: Reborn. The fan-made game boast 3D models, enhanced lighting, buffed textures and particle effects, and the famed over-the-shoulder gameplay of Resident Evil 4. There’s even the ability to walk while aiming and shooting– a mechanic that was cried for in the old days of RE games. One thing that stands out in the gameplay video above is just how dark the lighting is. It calls to mind the high anxiety playthrough of the original Resident Evil games, as well as similar titles like Silent Hill, where it was more frightening not knowing what was around you at any given moment.

InvaderGames put a lot of attention into the details of the environment and character models to keep close to their source material, but the most interesting aspect is the sound. There is no music playing through the game at all, which tends to be par for the course with Resident Evil, but the remake also contains all of the original sound effects from Resident Evil 2. It makes for an oddly beautiful mix of old and new.

Resident Evil 2: Reborn is expected to release to the public for free by the end of the summer. No date has been given, but check out their YouTube and Twitter accounts to stay informed on updates.
