Radiohead Has Disappeared From the Internet, But Why?

You might think this news is so ******* special, or creepy, but either way this isn’t a surprise considering the band involved.

Radiohead, inarguably one of the biggest and most famous bands in the entire world, has just disappeared from the world wide web. No, really, the band has deleted any trace of themselves from their website, their Twitter account, and their Facebook page, and no one has any idea why.

If you currently go to radiohead.com all you will encounter is a white page (one that makes you think your browser isn’t loading for three minutes, thank you very much). If you head over to their Twitter page and you’ll find 1.58 million people following an account with no tweets, and no photos or media (not even an egg avatar!), though the page is following all five members and their frequent collaborator artist Stanley Donwood (the account does have one like). Meanwhile their Facebook page is in the same state, with millions and millions of people “liking” an empty account.

So what the hell is this about exactly? Nobody knows, but it most certainly has something to do with their upcoming album (it drops on June 1), which we’ve been told “will be like nothing like you’ve ever heard.” Might this mean it’s coming out sooner? Or could this just be a huge publicity stunt, where now everyone in the music and entertainment world will constantly be paying attention to their social media pages waiting for the next shoe to drop?

This could even just be build-up for the release of their new music video, the one directed by none other than Paul Thomas Anderson himself. It’s not like Radiohead hasn’t done some unusual things before when releasing a new album (I will always think the “pay what you want” for In Rainbows was inspired genius), and creating social media buzz (everyone has noticed, but we first saw it at Gizmodo) by cleaning your social media accounts is the kind of meta tactic they might use.

Without knowing if this mere PR or the start of something really cool and exciting just means that, whatever the point of this, it is is working. We were super excited for their first new album since 2011’s King of Limbs, but now we’re excited and intrigues.

What do you think all of this means? Tell us in the comments below.
