Are you ready for more Fear Street? Can you handle the secrets of the sketchy neighborhood of Shadyside? You’re about to find out, as the latest Fear Street novel, Party Games, will be hot off the press come September 30, 2014. Even more exciting, in a recent interview Stine revealed that he will be writing six new Fear Street books on top of the 50+ he has written over the last twenty years. There has not been a new novel in the series since 1995!

I think this is a sign that YA and teenage horror is going to be the next big trend in horror. While Twilight very gently tested the waters (Twilight is not horror, it’s a soap opera with werewolves and vampires — not that there’s anything wrong with that!) and showed that audiences could be ready for supernatural characters in the mainstream. For full blown YA terror, I suppose we’ll all have to wait and see how much Stine’s new book sells. But I would be willing to bet that after the success of 2013’s PG-13 horror offerings like Mama and Insidious: Chapter 2, followed by the upcoming release of Ouija and Jessabelle, non-R rated horror will return as the big trend in horror on screen. Also in the works are, of course, the feature film adaptation of Stine’s other beloved terrifying favorites, Goosebumps, starring Jack Black, and Disney’s retelling of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes… not to mention a reboot of Tales From the Darkside coming to The CW next year. Could a feature film adaptation of the Fear Street series be next?

The Sixth Sense, Psycho, The Ring, Drag Me To Hell, The Last Exorcism, The Others, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, and Insidious are all non-R horror and all still objectively scary. What are your thoughts? Are you excited to read more from teenage horror master R.L. Stine?
