Quentin Tarantino Could Have Made a SGT. ROCK Film

Sgt. Rock may be far from DC Comics’ best known character, but he’s one of the few creations to entice director Quentin Tarantino into potentially helming a story that he didn’t write himself. Back in 2008, there were rumors that Tarantino was circling the long-gestating Sgt. Rock movie, and in new interview, Tarantino confirms that his interest wasn’t just talk.

“There is a script – I’m not going to do it – that I always really liked a lot by David Webb Peoples, who wrote Unforgiven and Blade Runner,” related Tarantino while speaking with Metro. “He wrote a movie version of Sgt Rock that I always thought was really terrific. I don’t think I’m ever going to end up doing it but I really did like that script and it’s one of the few times I’ve considered doing another [writer’s] script.”

Sgt. Rock was created in 1959 by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert in DC’s Our Army at War comic, but his popularity eventually led Sgt. Rock to take over the comic until it came to an end in 1988. The stories of Sgt. Frank Rock and Easy Company were set during World War II, and they were famous for their grim depiction of life during wartime.

Tarantino eventually made his own World War II movie called Inglorious Basterds (have you heard of it?!) and he’s repeatedly mentioned his desire to retire from filmmaking after his tenth movie. But there may still be a Sgt. Rock movie someday, just not the version that Tarantino was attracted to. The last time a Sgt. Rock film came up, producer Joel Silver indicated that it would be set in the near future as opposed to World War II.
