If we recall correctly, Psy’s music video for “Gangnam Style” was a pretty big deal, but it’s not 2012 anymore and the hype has largely died down, so now the South Korean singer is trying to re-establish his relevance. His latest effort is a new music video for a song called “Daddy”, and the result is… creepy.
The video, like “Gangnam Style”, is dance-heavy, but this time, the overarching theme isn’t a man in the prime of his life leading a luxurious lifestyle. Instead, the clip focuses on a man in the prime of his life leading a luxurious lifestyle along with older and younger versions of himself, whose faces are artificially aged copies that are edited onto different bodies. Seeing a school-aged Psy, with the face of a 37-year-old man, make young girls faint in the hallway and force his teacher to leave the room because she’s too hot and bothered is more unsettling than we expected.
The song itself is a gender-bent remake of will.i.am’s “I Got It From My Mama”, and while the track may have had an impact during the height of Psy’s global domination, today, it falls flat. The dubstep-inspired pop sound hasn’t been en vogue for some time now, much like Psy himself. The guy might be capable of re-establishing himself as more than a one-hit-wonder, but if he is, this won’t be the song to do it.
