His Royal Badness is back! Rock, Pop and Soul icon Prince is returning to perform on the Saturday Night Live stage November 1st, which will mark his third time as musical guest on the show, this time performing with his new band 3RDEyeGirl. November 1 also marks former SNL cast member Chris Rock‘s return as host. 2014 has been a big year for Prince already. Aside from celebrating the 30th anniversary of his seminal album and movie Purple Rain and an upcoming remastered edition, Prince also released two new albums on the same day this year: his solo album Art Official Age, and an album with his all-female group 3RDEyeGirl, PlecrtumElectrum.
Prince’s solo album debuted at number one on Billboard’s R&B Chart, while PlectrumElectrum debuted at number one on the Rock Chart, making Prince the first artist in over a decade to debut two albums in the Top 10 at the same time. Both new studio albums marked a historic return to Warner Bros. Records, Prince’s original label. That once massively successful partnership ended badly (this was the era when Prince wrote “Slave” on his face and changed his name to O+->. It was the ’90s, ok? The renewed partnership came after the announcement that Warner Bros. Records returned the master recordings of his seminal ’80s albums like Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign ‘O’ the Times. Hopefully all this activity we’ve seen from Prince lately is precipitating a new tour. It’s been way too long since we’ve had one of those from him.
In the meantime, check out Prince’s video for one of his latest songs, Breakfast Can Wait:
