President Barack Obama’s Summer Playlist Is Incredibly Good

Of the 44 people who have held the office, Barack Obama might be the most outspoken music fan to ever call himself President of the United States. Just in the past 12 months, he’s spoken with Kendrick Lamar and at SXSW, declared his love for J. Cole and Lamar, sang a Ray Charles song with Usher, and most recently, was seen getting pumped up to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” backstage at the Democratic National Convention.

Obama is also a man who appreciates a good playlist: He and Michelle Obama shared a holiday-themed one last December. Now he’s taken to Twitter to share a pair of summer playlists, one featuring songs for sunny days and one featuring songs for summer nights. Both mixes are pretty robust and varied in their selections: There are summer classics (The Beach Boys), hip-hop (Chance The Rapper, Wale, Jay Z); vintage R&B and soul (Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Prince); contemporary R&B and soul (Janelle Monaé, Leon Bridges); indie (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Courtney Barnett), and some international picks (Caetano Veloso, Manu Chao).

Obama may not be able to play the saxophone like Bill Clinton, but he sure does seem to have a pulse on what’s trending now and classics from preceding decades. Check out the playlist above, and let us know what you think of the POTUS’ preferred summer jams.
