Prepare to Die in DARK SOULS III This April

It’s only been a few days since From Software and Bandai Namco took to the web and revealed that the next entry in the Souls series, Dark Souls III, would be launching on March 24, 2016 in Japan. While the world was holding it’s breath during Sony’s TGS 2015 press conference, hoping to get release dates for the rest of the world, the developer instead took the opportunity to announce Bloodborne’s upcoming expansion titled The Old Hunters, and to also reiterate the third Souls game’s Japanese release date. Thankfully however, the company has finally come forward and revealed a bit more.

Dark Souls III will be coming to the Xbox One, PS4, and PC in North America, Europe, and South America in April 2016. The exact date hasn’t been pinned down just yet, but we’re hoping it isn’t too long after the game debuts in Japan. As of right now, it is unclear what the reason for the delay is.

The game’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki has stressed several times that this title marks a turning point for the series. From what we’ve been told so far — and from what I had the opportunity to get my hands on this summer — the game has pulled several elements from the preceding Souls games as well as the PS4 exclusive Bloodborne.

While combat feels a bit more approachable than 2011’s Dark Souls, the upcoming game draws heavily on the original’s clever level design, leading players down winding corridors, secret passageways and more. The new weapon arts are reminiscent of Bloodborne’s weapon transformations, adding an extra layer of complexity to the way the title is played. Additionally, enemies hit harder and react quicker, forcing players to think on their feet and potentially favor a more offensive play style.

As the date draws nearer, we’re sure to learn more and keep you updated.
