Premiere: Houndmouth’s ‘Say It’ Video is Like a Wes Anderson Horror Film

For Indiana four-piece Houndmouth, as should be the case for every band, earnestness and is a virtue. “Say It”, the penultimate track on the group’s sophomore record Little Neon Limelight, is a plea to cut all the bullshit and just deliver your message without the extraneous weight of ulterior motives or shade.

Floating in the ether like a Bob Dylan track circa Highway 61 Revisited, the track makes the case that the simplest things–in this case honesty–are always the most difficult to effectuate. The band’s Matt Myer’s explains: “I got tired of forced politeness. Putting on a smile. Being a nice guy. It all stems from not saying what you wanna say when you wanna say it. You gotta have real talk. At the end of the day we all go home and get naked and fornicate anyways. So let’s act like it.” Amen.

The music video, directed by Matt Fulks, looks like what might happen were David Lynch and Wes Anderson to team up for an extremely surreal, nonlinear horror film, featuring a baroque mansion, a ballerina dancing with a horse jockey, and a slew of nonlinear scenes about the imposing doom that ties the characters together. When considered with the meaning of this song, it functions more as a mystical cautionary tail i.e. if you don’t say what is on your mind, you will probably dissipate into a threatening cloud of fog inside of a phone booth, never to see your loved ones again.
