Premiere: ‘Fat Tom’ by Soda Bomb Is Ideal Slacker Rock

I felt lethargic alllllllllll dayyyyyyyy yesterday–I don’t know if it was from oversleeping or from the inklings of a sore throat that I am most certainly about to get–but I found myself listening to “Fat Tom” by Soda Bomb nearly constantly.

It’s indolent garage rock at its finest–The Long Island foursome thrash into power chord-fueled euphoria as lyrics about “drunk Long Island transplants” come off like urgent complaints. Perhaps one of the most accurate aural metaphors about this band is provided by the group itself: On their Facebook page, the dudes have listed their genre as “tony hawk pro skater,” and for anyone who came of age in the 2000s this makes complete sense. I can imagine this track coming on right in between Goldfinger and Primus while I am trying to land a Rocket Air with Bob Burnquist.

And then there is this incredible music video. Second to Action Bronson’s video for “Actin Crazy”, this is one of my favorite green-screen music videos of 2015. I love how intentionally lo-fi and shoddy the whole aesthetic is. Shots of the band zoom in and out in front of emoji collages, a picture of supermarket banana bunches, and footage of Space Jam because why the f–k not? The whole thing is making me want to pick my guitar back up, call my high school buddies and resurrect my band. Thanks, Soda Bomb. You have inspired me.

Soda Bomb’s debut LP, Wanna Jam, is out now via Broken World Media.
