PREACHER Gets a Full Series Order at AMC

In a nice bit of good news that should come as a surprise to pretty much no one, AMC has picked up Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s adaptation of Garth Ennis’ classic Vertigo/DC Comics book Preacher with a full-season order. Not long ago, the network gave the show a pilot commitment, but now word has come down via Seth Rogen’s Twitter that the show is indeed going to series, with the actor turned producer tweeting “Preacher is coming to AMC! The beginning is nigh!” Along with that tweet, Rogen released a logo for the series as well as some preliminary key art.

Preacher has long been in development from the team of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Sony TV, and AMC Studios. Goldberg directed the pilot, and Sam Catlin of Breaking Bad—who wrote the pilot script—will serve as showrunner. Original series creators Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon will serve as producers as well, which should ease the concerns of many fans of the original comic series.

For those who have never read it, Preacher centers on Jesse Custer, played by Dominic Cooper, a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), the three embark on a journey to literally find God.

Preacher is coming at a crucial time for AMC; for a long time they were a triple threat with Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. But with the first two of those shows now ended, a new high-profile (and edgy) series is just what the doctor ordered, and Preacher could be just the ticket. Although nothing is confirmed yet, sources are saying that the first season will get a ten-episode order, and the show is expected to air in May of 2016, fully cementing next year as the year of complete comic book adaptation nirvana.
