POWER RANGERS Reboot Sets July 2016 Release Date

2016 may be home to Captain America 3, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and X-Men: Apocalypse (to name a few), but now we can add another title to that most-anticipated list. The upcoming Power Rangers reboot has joined the 2016 club. According to a press release sent out earlier today, the studio will be releasing the film on July 22nd, 2016, pitting it against Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur.

So far all we know about the reboot is that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are writing the script, with Roberto Orci attached to executive produce. There’s currently no director officially on board and no cast to be spoken for. However, Orci has reassured fans that the film will look to take the Star Trek approach and include series canon in the story rather than write off years of mythology completely.

Though folks are already getting geared up for 2015’s release calendar that includes heavyweights like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mad Max: Fury Road, Jurassic World, Ant-Man, Star Wars: Episode VII, Terminator Genisys, and The Fantastic Four, it’s never too early to take a look at 2016. We suspect the Power Rangers reboot is going to dominate the box office much like Transformers has this summer. ‘90s nostalgia is at an all-time high, and we’re excited to see what the creative team has in store for long-time fans of the series.

Guess it’s time to start polishing that Nerdist Zord… Yes, there’s a Nerdist Zord. Don’t worry about it.

Who do you think should direct the Power Rangers reboot? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Rocky says:

I think they should just leave the Original Mighty Morphine Power Rangers alone. Why mess with the Originals? It was a shame they even went as far as the Zeo/Dino and whatever else they had. This is just coming from a fan of the MMPR. I grew up with Tommy and Kimberly! But whoever they get to direct I hope they do it well and the script writers don’t let us down. It won’t just be a new generation watching this it will be us fans from way back when watching as well 😉

  2. jimu says:

    My daughter is very excited.

  3. Brenson says:

Joss yes, Joss Whedon + Power Rangers = me crying like a little baby with joy

  4. Pepsinestro says:

I hate that Roberto Orci is involved in any capacity.

    • Brenson says:

Why that on the man that brought us such awesome and varied things? Hercules, Xena, Jack of all Trades, Alias, Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens, Fringe, Transformers Prime, Sleepy Hollow, Ender’s Game, an Amazing Spider-Man 2.

  5. Fernando says:

I hope joss whedon! He did great with avengers.

  6. bigangryape says:

    Robert Rodriguez would be perfect.

  7. Chad says:

Reboot?  I thought it was still on the air?

    • Pepsinestro says:

Super Mega Force or some such shit is on the air. This would be the OG Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers!

      • Johnny says:

I wouldn’t be throwing around the term “OG” when it comes to Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

      • Brenson says:

Although the Megaforce idea was a travesty of what the could of done with one of the decent Japanese sentai series, Gokaiger. There were supposed to be pirates that stole the powers of other Ranges through time, but that turned into crazy tiki I dont even know, I watched one ep and there was an angel, and I was out. Though they do keep the world canon with Jason David Frank popping up eventually (i know this because I follow him on facebook cool guy “Tommy”) the only good series in recent memory though is Dino Thunder, but that was a while ago.

  8. Andrew says:

*Crosses fingers and closes eyes tight* “Not Michael Bay, not Michael Bay, please, God, anybody but Michael Bay”

  9. Dustin says:

Dominating at the. Transformers level? I kinda doubt it. Power Rangers was popular, but not that popular. I’d say it’ll be more along the lines of the new TMNT movie.

    • Brenson says:

You apparently missed all of the 90’s. I remember as a little kid going live Power Ranger’s shows, TMNT only had that at parks, and in big cities. Also Turtle Power was an American thing. The Power Rangers were Global.

  10. Ryan Fox says:

I think I’m more worried about this Nerdist Zord than who should be directing this movie…
