Postmodern Jukebox Tackles Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’

Oh Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, when will your talent cease? We’d like to estimate somewhere around “never”. In their latest cover, they tackle Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua’s 1997 pop hit “Barbie Girl” in a vintage Beach Boys style.

Complete with Barbie – Broadway singer Morgan James – and a few Ken’s on back up vocals, the folks at Postmodern Jukebox really embrace the songs they cover. We’ve featured them before with their covers of Radiohead’s “Creep”, The Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” and the best slow jam version of the Ducktales theme you’d ever hear in your damn life!

What’s surprising is the absolute consistency of the covers of Scott Bradlee and co. You’d be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t seem to improve a song. Let’s face it, they not only made a version of a Miley Cyrus song that’s quite enjoyable, they even made a Nickelback song listenable. I stand by that sentence. Their motown cover of “How You Remind Me” is infinitely better than any song Nickelback has ever recorded. I suppose it might be a testament to good songwriting, but I promise you that’s the most praise I’ll ever give Nickelback. I feel immensely dirty having said that much and I sincerely hope there isn’t some sort of Betelgeuse situation having just mentioned their name 3 times.

Anyway, the beach boy-ified version of “Barbie Girl” is sure to get stuck in your head just as much as the pop version that took over the world back in the 90’s. They even pay tribute to the Beach Boys with some theremin – albiet HUMAN theremin – action just after the two minute mark.

What’s your favorite Postmodern Jukebox song? What’s the worst Nickelback song? (Trick question, it’s all of them.) Let us know in the comments below.
