Pop Artist Takashi Murakami Makes Edible Art with Frisk Candy

Takashi Murakami’s artwork sells for millions of dollars… but now you can own a piece of your very own for just under four. Yes, Murakami has launched a line of art candy, a collaboration with the Belgian confectionary Frisk, to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

This collaboration makes sense as Murakami’s bridge between high and low art is often blurred. His colorful superflat pop art has graced everything from to Kanye West album covers to the finest galleries in the world.

Inspired by Murakami’s designs and color, the packaging for the mints are metal tins are emblazoned with Murakami superflat art. Inside each individual tin, the mints come in three flavors: cherry, mint, and exotic fruit. The small candies are formed into shapes that resemble Murakami’s signature flowers and kawaii skulls. As Murakami himself states, the candies are like “little sculptures.” Think of it as deliciously intricate pocket art.

Frisk has released a video that tells the concept behind the collaboration. Throughout, ethereal music plays while the colorful floating candies put you into a dreamlike state. Then at the end comes the voice of Murakami saying, “You’d think if you ate a skull it would be poisonous… but hey, it’s tasty!” Now if that doesn’t sell candy, I don’t know what does.
