We’re often asked two very important questions here at Nerdist: What is Chris Hardwick really like, and what is your favorite part of your job? Let the record show that Chris is just as awesome and nice around the office as he is on TV and in audio form. As far as the favorite part of our job, for me, it’s easily getting to talk about and debate movies, comics, video games, and comedy with a team of some of the wittiest and intelligent writers you can find.
At a recent meeting, we got on the subject of our favorite horror films, and thought it was high time to bring our readers into the discussion. It isn’t really genre horror per say, and I would not have included it without having seen it on the Nerdist list, but truly the most terrifying thing to have ever been put on screen. It’s worse knowing that all of it is real.
It’s a good list. I am also missing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the 1974 original), and Poltergeist.
And Cronenberg’s ‘Fly”
Blair Witch Project really got under my skin and gave me nightmares for three years, which should count for something.

Woot! great posting team nerdist. I cant believe The Thing is #1…i completely agree with that rating. Its my personal all-time-favorite horror movie.
Other notable additions:
* Halloween – undisputed champ of all slasher flix. John Carpenter does it again.
* Evil Dead 2 – good call @Orit. This is by far the greatest all-time Horror-Comedy.
* Jaws – yup…its a horror….seems weird to classify it as such as its like one of the greatest movies ever…but it is a horror thru and thru.
* Dead Alive (aka braindead) – funnest gorriest.
* Poltergeist – best ‘scared the crap out of me as a kid’.
* The Ghost and Mr Chicken – ok ok its a comedy and not a horror but it wins for “best goosebump inducing final scene”. Im literally getting goosebumps thinking about it.
* Cabin in the Woods – best horror in the last couple years.
* 70’s Invasion of the Bodysnatchers – best final shot.

What?!?!? What have you got against Evil dead 2 delightfully super campy it’s the best and let’s not forget Brain dead (called Dead Alive in the U.S I think) taking a lawn mower to some zombies and a funny intestinal tract I mean that is just beyond wonderful and disgusting with the mom eating her ear in the soup and what not…

What kind of horror list doesn’t have Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) or Halloween (1978 or 2007)?
Not one of these is scarier than The Shining.
I have to pick a favorite?! That’s like picking my favorite child. 🙂
Although, I am fond of Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and The Children.
Can’t forget ‘Night of the Comet’.
I love House! I was so excited when I was able to buy a real copy so I didn’t have to watch it on the crappy VHS tape I recorded it to from my TV in the mid eighties. It still makes me laugh, cry and jump out of my skin! I miss William Katt (loved him in this and in ‘Greatest American Hero.’… I want that suit). Interesting list. I’m surprised it didn’t include more of Hitchcock’s and Stephen King’s work.
Ginger Snaps, The Descent, and Return of the Living Dead are some of my favorites. I do enjoy the mixture of horror and humor!
