Pokémon Go is dominating the iOS App Store right now. As popular as it is in America, it looks like the augmented reality game is really a hit in Australia. In light of the enthusiasm the game has received, an event was organized in Sydney by PAX Australiaâs Guy Blomberg: the Pokémon Go Sydney Walk, which he intended to be a fun meet-and-greet that hopefully some people would show up to.
Some people definitely showed upâsome 2,000 of them, according to Blomberg (via Kotaku). The streets of Sydney were flooded with gamers in cosplay roaming around the city in pursuit of a more complete Pokédex.
“We had around about 5,000 people that said they were going to attend, and anecdotally, I think a couple of thousand turned up, which was pretty impressive, all around the Botanical Gardens and the Sydney Opera House,” Blomberg told a local ABC station.
On the same day, there was a similar event that took place across the country in Perth, and that walk was enjoyed by about 1,000 players as well. Here’s what the scene looked like there, via Channel 7 News:
No events like this have been reported on in the U.S. just yet, but we can only imagine how wild it could be based on how into Pokémon Go the country has become. It’s a bona fide phenomenon, and sore legs have become an epidemic because of the game. Somebody did figure out how to play the game using a drone, though, so maybe there’s a Pokémon Go drone meet-up in our future?
