Player Piano Tackles The Tetris Theme On A Pinball Machine Piano

Video game music, especially the old 8-bit kind, was more than just jingles you heard whilst playing a game. In its own way, it was the classical music of the Nintendo age, and right at the top of the list of such concertos is the “A-Theme” from one of the most popular and perfect games of all time, Tetris. This is music that, while intensely repetitive (like the game itself), so perfectly matched the time and the functionality of the game that you almost can’t think of anything else as complementary. Which is why it being played by a professional on a piano made out of a pinball machine makes the most sense in the world.

This is part of Geek & Sundry‘s Player Piano series in which a pianist/composer named Sonya Belousova arranges piano versions of famous themes and soundtracks while director Tom Grey makes a video that best accompanies the song. It’s a symbiotic relationship, and finding such an awesome piano for Sonya to play in this video was a real coup.

Sonya and Tom are looking to make more of these high-quality videos, and have just today launched an Indiegogo campaign to get the funding they need. They’re looking to reach $60,000 by the end of the year, which is totally doable, and will allow them to make 5 videos. More than that, and they make more videos. Simple as math. Some of the music they’d like to make next includes music from Halo, The Legend of Zelda, Sherlock, Cowboy Bebop, Super Mario Bros., Star Wars and more.

If you’d like to help them out, you can find all the information on their Indiegogo page and if you’d like to see another example of their amazing work, how’s about a sweet rendition of the theme to the anime classic Akira?
