PLANET EARTH II’s Sea Iguana and Snake Chase Captivates the Internet

In these difficult and trying times, it’s almost comforting to know that the world’s next great action hero is a baby sea iguana. It’s true! A clip from the recently released Planet Earth II documentary of a sea iguana’s desperate run from a den of snakes has captured the internet’s heart, and it may be more thrilling than anything you’ve seen at the movies.

Within this footage from the first episode of Planet Earth II, the unnamed baby iguana found itself surrounded by snakes that wanted nothing more than to make a meal of it. After attempting to stay still and elude the snakes’ senses, the iguana made a mad dash for survival, as snakes seemingly appeared out of every corner of the beach. The iguana’s frantic climb up the rocks even featured some incredibly dramatic shots of one last snake diving in pursuit of it and just failing to reach its target. Like any good Hollywood action movie, there was even a brief cliffhanger in which the iguana was almost finished by the snakes before it broke free from their coils. This mesmerizing sequence has brought in almost 4 million views on YouTube alone.

Credit where credit is due: this was a beautifully shot and edited video by the production team behind Planet Earth II. The events depicted in the scene were inherently dramatic, but the narration by Sir David Attenborough and the music by Jasha Klebe and Jacob Shea also did a lot to make it catch fire online.

The next episode of Planet Earth II will debut on BBC One today, and we’re eager to see which of the new clips can match the power of this one.
