Pickstarter: Wheel of Flame Candles Bring RPGs to the Next Level

Tabletop roleplaying games are an exercise in imagination. The stories and the campaigns are laid out by DMs and the setting is created by the gaming companies, but the actual world that unfolds exists only within the mind’s eye.

But what if you could enhance your RPG experience and actually use your sense of smell to help you create the world in which you’re playing? That’s where Lauren Rock’s Boonzy Arts comes in. Rock is in the final days of a successful Kickstarter campaign for Wheel of Flame RPG candles that were created to evoke different settings within the fantasy roleplaying realms.

“I got the idea for the Wheel of Flame candles while playing a short campaign module with some friends,” explained Rock. “I’d started my candle business recently, and while we were playing, our DM kept describing the scents and odors of the environment. I thought to myself, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if this were more immersive?’ After that, the ideas started flowing. I thought of some basic locations to use as inspirations for the scents, and then I reached out to some of my extremely talented friends to help design the labels and produce the Kickstarter video.”

While the labels weren’t designed in time for the Kickstarter video, artist Wilson Swain has finished the first three labels.

Wheel of Flame Labels
As originally conceived, Rock offered a set of three Wheel of Flame candles to Kickstarter backers:

  • Lair of the Dragon: musky and smoky, like incense.
  • Fortress of Sorcery: spicy sandalwood with hints of olive and cypress.
  • Forest of Enchantment: earthy blue spruce with notes of eucalyptus.

However, the response to the first set of Wheel of Flames candles has been so strong that Rock has added a second set of candles to the Kickstarter campaign.

  • Sands of the Desert: sage, dried grass, and cactus flower
  • Port by the Ocean: sea salt and ocean air
  • Castle in the Clouds: crisp, fresh, and light.

As of this post, Wheel of Flame has far surpassed its funding goal with over $25,000 from nearly 400 backers. But there’s still time for RPG fans to get both sets of candles by visiting the Kickstarter campaign page and making a pledge. The Wheel of Flame Kickstarter will end on Sunday, August 23 at 8:09am.
