Pickstarter: Socks the Clinton Cat’s Lost Video Game Lives Again!

Pickstarter: Socks the Clinton Cat’s Lost Video Game Lives Again!

If you lived through the ’90s (or you really love history), you surely remember Socks, the First Cat of the United States. Back when Bill Clinton was President, the Clintons brought their cat Socks to the White House; he ended up with a fan following and even his own SNES game. While the game, Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill, was nearly completed, it was never officially released. But that may soon change.

Second Dimension is running a Kickstarter campaign to publish Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill as both a digital game and an SNES cartridge that will actually work with the system. And it just might take your mind off of some other campaign that just won’t freakin’ end!

According to Digiboston (via Kotaku), game collector Tom Curtin and retro publisher Adam Welch located a prototype of the Socks the Cat game, and they’ve even hired a programmer to fix the bugs that were left behind in the original game! They’ve also commissioned a very authentic looking piece of box art that definitely looks like it could have come from the Super Nintendo era.

Don’t assume that Socks the Cat was just was going to approach political satire with a partisan bent loyal to the Clintons’ Democratic Party. From all indications, Socks the Cat was meant to mock both sides of the political divide, as well as the mechanisms of our government. Some of that satire may have gone over the heads of the game’s intended audience, but the effort is appreciated.

As of the time of this article, Second Dimension is about $5,000 shy of its $30,000 fund raising goal for Socks the Cat. The Kickstarter will run until Tuesday, November 8. To contribute to the campaign, click here.
