PENNY DREADFUL Season 3 Trailer Embraces Darkness

Darkness is never far away from the lead characters of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. It exists within each man and woman, and it will ultimately swallow them whole. Even Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives can’t hold back her inner evil forever.

Showtime has released a new trailer for Penny Dreadful season 3 which finds Vanessa confined to an asylum, perhaps in a last-ditch effort to escape her dark destiny. But in an unsettling twist, Vanessa appears to enjoy the memory of evil’s touch a little too much.

The trailer also catches up with Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) as he unleashes his inner werewolf; while Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) laments that he has “walked in blood every step.” For Malcolm, his pain may be just beginning, as his vampiric adversaries from the first season appear to be making a comeback. Dare we say that the vamps are out for blood?

As for the creature (Rory Kinnear), he’s back in his familiar setting and he appears to have found a lover…she just isn’t his intended bride. The reborn Lily Frankenstein (Billie Piper) had far too much spirit to be controlled by either the creature or her creator, and now she’s got her own agenda with the ageless Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney).

Joining the Victorian monster mash this season is Shazad Latif as Dr. Jekyll. And where Dr. Jekyll goes, can Mr. Hyde be far behind? Ethan and Sir Malcolm will get a new ally in the form of the Native American warrior Kaetenay (Wes Studi). But before Vanessa can make her way out of the asylum, she’ll have to deal with Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone), an intense therapist who has her own ideas about how to treat Vanessa’s problems.

Penny Dreadful season 3 will premiere on May 1.
