New Trailer, Poster for PENNY DREADFUL Season 3

Attention, all you “dreadheads” out there–the long wait for the third season of Showtime’s sumptous gothic drama Penny Dreadful is nearly over. Showtime has just released an extended trailer for season three of the series, which you can view above, as well as a gorgeous teaser poster, which you can fix your eyes on right down below. So go ahead, watch the trailer a few times like I did, then come back and let’s process what we just watched together.

Ok, so before we talk about that trailer, a nice big SPOILER warning for the first two seasons of Penny Dreadful. If you haven’t seen them yet, go get on that, and come back.

When last we left our tortured cast of characters, Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) was taking the body of his loyal friend Sembene (Danny Sapani) back to Africa; Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) was returning to America to face his past; Lily Frankenstein (Billie Piper) had hooked up Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) to take over the world, leaving her creator Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) with a broken heart; and Frankentstein’s monster (Rory Kinnear) had taken off to parts unknown that looked very cold (the North Pole?). It seemed all our principal characters were going their separate ways.

Well, judging from this trailer, their paths won’t stay separate for too long. It also looks like Frankenstein’s monster finally gets to get it on with someone (is that Vanessa? Hard to tell). Dorian and Lily throw a hell of a party, and the vampires minions of Dracula from season one are set to return. We also see Vanessa in an asylum, something which was no picnic in the 19th century. Sir Malcolm ends up in the Old West wearing a cowboy hat, and most importantly, Ethan Chandler gets a haircut.

Cast additions to the show this year include Patti LuPone–who guest starred last year as the Cut-wife–as Dr. Seward, an American therapist who treats Vanessa with an unconventional new approach. Wes Studi joins as Kaetenay, an intense, enigmatic Native American who has a deep connection to Ethan, and Shazad Latif as Dr. Jekyll, the latest literary character to join the show’s ensemble. Also coming onboard this year are Dexter’s Christian Camargo, Sam Barnett, and Jessica Barden.

Peanny Dreadful season three premieres on Showtime on Sunday, May 1 at 10pm.
