Pen & Paper Gaming Ain’t Dead, and SAVING THROW Wants You To Know It

Time was, you didn’t need anything to play a big, hours-long game than a pencil, paper, and your imagination. That was long before the advent of enormous, multi-disc RPG video games that you can play in the course of a year. You used to have to get a whole group of people together, make up a character, and put that character into a lot of situations as dictated by a book and a keeper of said book. That’s right, kiddos, games used to be all about reading, writing, and math (I refuse to say “‘rithmatic”) but with dragons and swords and orcs and stuff. And guess what! That type of gaming isn’t dead at all. It’s way more than just Dungeons & Dragons, and not so hard to get into, which is where the new web series Saving Throw comes in.

Saving Throw is a season-long tutorial on how to play a specific game. For the first season, hosts Ivan Van Norman (King of the Nerds), Amy Vorpahl (The Mindy Project) and Benjamin Dunn (Nerdterns) have chosen the fantasy epic game Pathfinder, which combines themes found in Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, and World of Warcraft. Ben is brand new to this kind of RPG gaming, so the series is for people to learn to play these games right along with Ben, and to not be afraid of the stigma involved in it.

Like all good game-related shows, it’s as interactive as the game itself. Take a look!

The series was created by Dom Zook, Tyler Rhodes and Benjamin Dunn and has been described as “TableTop meets Mythbusters.” If that sounds like something into which you are (grammar), then subscribe to Saving Throw and join in the quest.

  1. Dom Zook sounded like a very familiar name. Looked up his IMDB looks like he has some working relationships with Dead Gentlemen, who made the “The Gamers” franchise. Will have to support this show if he has worked with DG.
