Did PARKS AND REC’s Ron Swanson Kill a Character on THE GOOD PLACE?

Fans of both Parks and Rec and The Good Place have long theorized the two shows share the same universe. They were both created by Michael Schur, and NBC’s series about four humans struggling to reach eternal paradise is full of Easter eggs from our favorite government office. But the newest evidence the characters exist in the same reality isn’t just the strongest confirmation yet; it indicates Ron Swanson might have inadvertently killed someone on The Good Place. And yes, it’s because everything he builds is of the highest quality.

In this edition of Nerdist News (which contains spoilers for the first two seasons of The Good Place), Jessica Chobot explains how an episode from The Good Place: The Podcast, featuring a fake commercial for the Swanson Safe Company, turned what most thought was a just fun reference into the best proof yet that both shows are intimately connected. What makes this faux-ad so convincing, considering Parks and Rec never said anything about the Very Good Building and Construction Company making safes? Not only does the promo specifically warn against using one in the very stupid, very fatal way Jason Mendoza did during his botched robbery, but it is also narrated by the smooth voice of our favorite no-nonsense mustachioed handyman.

If you need a sturdy, dependable safe to keep your possessions secure, you’d want one built by Ron Swanson for the exact same reasons that, if you are an idiot hoping to hide inside one, you would not. That thing is going to be both airtight and devoid of safety instructions.

Sweet, stupid Jason never had a chance.

What do you think? Is Ron Swanson responsible for Jason’s death? Is this definitive proof the shows exist in the same universe? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
