Legendary’s MYST TV Series Invites a Stranger Into Your Home

Well, this news is one for the Ages. According to Deadline, Legendary TV & Digital Media is teaming up with Cyan Worlds to bring seminal PC puzzler Myst to TV screens across the land. For those of you who don’t know, the eponymous 1993 game put players in the shoes of a character named The Stranger who finds a mysterious book called Myst only to wind up sucked into its pages and the fantasy world contained within. Exploring the mysterious island, the Stranger is caught in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with two sinister brothers who are trapped within the pages of books themselves.

Of the project, Cyan said that teaming up with Legendary will allow them to “finally [be] able to express in a visual linear medium the rich story that the Myst franchise is dripping with.” Granted, when I last played Myst, it was mostly dripping with frustration, but that formula seemed to work well for Lost, so I’ll just wait and see what happens. Still, I’d love to see a scene where the protagonist just looks at the Red Book and screams, “I already found your goddamn pages, what more do you want from me?”

More interestingly, the show is being developed with a transmedia element in mind. Cyan Worlds is simultaneously developing a companion game which viewers can play on their tablet devices while watching the show. “Seventy percent of tablet owners use their device while watching TV at least several times a week,” said the company. “Cyan sees the potential to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling to a new level.”

If only they could find a way to implement Twitch Plays Pokemon-style controls on a TV show, then this would be the greatest thing to happen to TV in years.

  1. This may demonstrate my non-gamer status, but the Myst games are my favorites. I can’t wait for this show – and the companion game!

  2. It’s been quite a while since I played that game but I recognized the location immediately, The sequels where pretty good to.

My first game on my first computer I ever owned was “Riven”, one of the sequels to Myst. I was freakin’ hooked! LOL
