When Hayley Williams said Paramore was going to make a big comeback this year, she wasn’t kidding. In fact, she told us so. The pop-punk act announced their new album, After Laughter, will come out May 12 via Fueled By Ramen. Lead single “Hard Times” showed them embracing an unexpected ’80s synthpop twist with original drummer Zac Farro back in the band. Now, barely three weeks later, Paramore return with their second single, “Told You So,” and it’s just as good as the first.
“Told You So” sees Paramore continue in the radio pop direction, but they mold it around their perennial angst. A bit of funk bass hops in the background while that same tropical guitar-work we heard in “Hard Times” twirls throughout. Though Williams is singing about blame and accusatory one-upping when dealing with heartbreak, she delivers each chorus like it’s an anthem, giving the song much-needed momentum so that its glossy production makes you want to dance.
That energy carries into the song’s music video. For a second, you forget the song’s lyrics are so tangled and sad because it blends bold imagery with fun, swift movements. Let’s give credit to the retro noir imagery for that, like matching red berets in a speeding car, a shot of the guitar in the car’s rearview mirror, and light slits filtering through blinds so they turn Williams’ face into a piece of pop art. So far their first record in four years is shaping up to be a surprisingly bold change that suits them well. Check out the video below to see what we mean.
