PACIFIC RIM 2 Bumped From 2017 Release Date

Earlier this month, rumors surfaced that Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 was potentially in jeopardy of not happening, lost in the drift of development hell. Fortunately, both Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have now stated that Pacific Rim 2 is still alive. But that’s the only good news.

Pacific Rim 2 is getting pushed off of the Universal Pictures release schedule. While Pacific Rim 2 no longer has a release date, Pitch Perfect 3 has swooped in to claim its former date on August 4, 2017.

Universal’s official statement said that Pacific Rim 2 “will be redated at a later time” before adding that “the filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

There’s nothing that the Nerdist team wants more than a rematch between the giant robots (Jaegers) and the giant monsters (kaiju) from another dimension. Del Toro and his collaborator Travis Beacham have already been planning an expansion of the Pacific Rim franchise with comics from Legendary Comics and a potential animated series that would explore the early days of the kaiju invasion. Hopefully the live-action Pacific Rim sequel won’t be pushed off too far into the future.
