What OVERWATCH Could Look Like As a Fighting Game

One of the many reasons Overwatch has been a phenomenal success is because Blizzard populated the game with several distinct and compelling characters. Everyone has their favorites, and it’s made for some wildly entertaining multiplayer matches in this first-person shooter. But could the qualities that made Overwatch so popular be easily transferred to a fighting game? The YouTube channel TGN answered that question by releasing a video reimagining the Overwatch heroes in a brand new arena.

Via ComicBook.com, TGN’s video begins with an arcade style cabinet for the Overwatch fighting game before diving into a match between two of our favorite Tank characters: Reinhardt and Zarya. While the Overwatch designs may lend themselves more to a Street Fighter style game, the video makes several Mortal Kombat references, including a skull crushing animation and a cameo by Blizzard vice president Jeff Kaplan as he provides the “toasty!” commentary.

The simulated character select screen is very enticing, as it lines up many of Overwatch‘s most popular creations for more head-to-head battles. The second match featured in this video pits Genji against Doomfist.

This video actually makes a pretty strong case for an Overwatch fighting game. While a real game would need more innovations to stand out among the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Injustice titles, Overwatch already has the roster and the special moves to rival any fighting game series. It’s an idea worth pursuing if Blizzard decides to expand the reach of its Overwatch empire.
