Original Sketch of Wonder Woman Goes Up for Auction

Recently, we brought you a video showcasing some of the big names in the world of comics weighing in on the newest costume redesign DC has revealed for Wonder Woman. Since it seems Diana will be seeing yet another change in appearance, this is a perfect opportunity to look back at her history. IO9 reports that the first ever sketch of Wonder Woman was recently discovered in the estate of H.G. Peter, the artist of her first appearance in All-Star Comics #8. The drawing, which is going up for auction on Comic Link at a currently undisclosed amount, is accompanied by notes from both Peter and William Marston on changes they planned for the characters finalized look.

It is interesting to see the differences in this sketch compared to what her costume would eventually become. The star-studded belt and the open midriff design would obviously be reigned in and a little more subdued. Peter comments in his note to Marston that the eagle emblem is “tough to handle” and does not show up clearly, looking for advice on how to make it easier on himself and the readers. He also comments on the shoes being too much “like a stenographer” (Google it) and instead wants to go with something referencing her Greek roots. The design in the middle of both mockups appears to be what he wants. Marston’s response shows an arrow pointing toward most of the changes that would make the final design.
