ONCE UPON A TIME’S Showrunners Discuss the FROZEN Additions

We’ve been speculating about how the characters of Frozen would fit into the Once Upon a Time universe since Elsa swept into the picture in the season three finale. She’s not the only citizen of Arendelle entering the picture either; Anna and Kristoff are joining her in the series. Entertainment Weekly recently visited the Once Upon a Time set and talked with showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz about the forthcoming icy changes.

First of all, it’s a close-ended story. Kitsis says the Frozen arc will be handled in a similar fashion to what they did with Neverland last season. Kitsis confirms Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff will only have a limited appearance and won’t be around in season five.

They’re also not interested in giving Elsa a love interest. Horowitz stated they’re more focused on what the movie explored, which was the relationship between the sisters. That bond will be important to the story. As far as the specifics of the Frozen plot though? They’re not talking.

Kitsis was willing to give this tease, “Thematically we can say the first half of the season is about how you never give up on the people you love.”

That sounds very much like how Anna acted in the film. He also confirmed Elizabeth Mitchell is either the original Snow Queen or Elsa and Anna’s mother who somehow survived the shipwreck; she’s connected to both Storybrooke and Arendelle. I’m going to hope for the former even if the latter would tie into that love and family theme more.

What are your theories about how Arendelle will fit into Once Upon a Time? Share them in the comments.
