The new Terminator movie releases into theaters next week, and a few select screenings will get a special treat along with the film. According to io9, who got a hands-on experience, some screenings of Terminator: Genisys will also include a little game for the audience before the film plays in order to keep everyone entertained with more than trivia or local commercials for community colleges.
Audience members will be prompted to take out their cell phones (in a movie theater? How rude!) and connect to a specific wi-fi network. Upon connecting, each person will be randomly assigned to one of four color-coded teams and set to resist the machines.
On screen, four resistance fighters will square off against four T-800 terminator skeletons. Each fighter will have an aiming reticle for their team — red, blue, purple, or yellow. The reticles will swirl about over the screen and when it lands on the T-800 across from your team’s fighter, players must tap the FIRE button on their phone screen in order to deal damage to Skynet’s forces. Each Terminator that is destroyed is replaced soon after and the players progress through three levels with different enemies and environments. Once those three levels have ended, the scores for each team are tallied up and the team with the most points wins.
It is an interesting and surprisingly unexplored concept, and only time will tell if it will catch on and spread to more theaters, or more movies. For now, though only people seeing the film at AMC Lincoln Square IMAX 13 in New York, AMC Universal CityWalk 19 in Los Angeles, AMC Metreon IMAX 16 in San Francisco, AMC Boston Commons IMAX 19 in Boston and AMC Northpark IMAX 15 in Dallas will get a chance to try it out.
What do you think of this idea? Planning on venturing out to one of these theaters to give it a try? Let us know in the comments below!
