Nintendo NX Rumored to Be Portable Console

If you were feeling bereft about the lack of news about Nintendo’s next generation hardware at E3, then it’s time to console yourself. According to a recent post on Eurogamer, Nintendo‘s upcoming console, the NX–which we still don’t know much about, aside from the fact that it is slated to release in March 2017, and that we’ll be able to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on it–is rumored to be a portable console with detachable controllers, capable of connecting and displaying content on an HD TV. To better illustrate the idea, check out the concept art below (which was posted on Eurogamer‘s website):

This rumor comes courtesy of a number of Eurogamer‘s sources who’ve reportedly said that the system will have a built-in screen which is “bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.” After carrying it around and potentially gaming on the go, players will be able to plug the system in to a “dock station” to connect to their TV and play on the big screen.

Sources from DigitalFoundry also believe that the console will run on Nvidia’s powerful Tegra processor–which is one of the fastest mobile processors on the market at the moment. With reports that the system will use cartridges, every piece of the portable puzzle is starting to fit together. With all of the changes, however, sources say the console probably won’t support backwards compatibility.

Rumors of the system’s portability have been making the rounds for quite a while now. While Eurogamer‘s report sounds like it may very well be the case, we won’t know until Nintendo decides to open up about the system. Since teasing its existence, the Japanese giant has been keeping details pretty close to the vest.

Nerdist reached out to a Nintendo representative for comment:

“Nintendo has not made any new official announcements regarding NX which is due to launch in March 2017. As such [we’re] unable to comment on the various rumors and speculations circulating.”

Once it is announced, however, prepare for plenty of updates from your friendly Nerdist gaming team!
