Last month, we here at Nerdist reported that a stage production intended for a Broadway run of the celebrated John Kennedy Toole novel A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole was in the works. As mentioned then, a big time film adaptation has infamously been attempted so many times only to fall apart that many thought it could A Confederacy of Dunces movie could never be done.
That’s why the push for a Broadway version is our best hope of seeing Ignatius J. Reilly in person, so to speak, and watching all of his wondrous satirical misadventures. Today, that hope is further realized in possibly the best way, as America’s favorite personalities in actor/comedian/author/carpenter Nick Offerman has signed on to play Ignatius J. Reilly in a workshop reading for industry only.
If this attempt at adapting A Confederacy of Dunces makes it past this workshop read, there is no word on whether Offerman will go on as Ignatius. If he does, there will undoubtedly plenty of .gifs cut between Ignatius and Ron Swanson all over the Internet.
